Martirosyan, Roach re-unite!

After a one-year stay in Houston, Texas, Vanes “The Nightmare” Martirosyan (23-0, 14 KOs) has made his return back home to Glendale, CA. Vanes is excited to re-unite with his former trainer Freddie Roach, and ready to start training again at The WildCard Boxing Club in Hollywood, CA. “It saddens me to leave Ronnie Shields and Houston after a very productive one year run, but my team and I made a tough decision and believe this change will be best for my career at this time” said Martirosyan.

“I cannot thank Ronnie, Brian Caldwell, and Creed Fountain and the rest of the guys at Savannah Gym enough for the many hours they put in with me and for all that I learned during my time there. I would also like to take time to thank Dr. Albrik Nazarian for being a great friend and mentor during my stay in Houston. I do look forward to a fresh start here with Freddie Roach - who I began my pro career with, and can’t wait to get in the gym. This is a very big year for me and I’m now more than ever determined to take it to that next level and make some noise at 154.” (Continued)

Martirosyan (24-0) wins Primm bout
Junior middleweight lands pay-per-view fight
PRIMM -- Things are about to get tougher for Vanes Martirosyan.

After Saturday's performance, in which he scored a first-round technical knockout of Harrison Cuello at Primm Valley Resorts' Star of the Desert Arena, it couldn't get any easier for Martirosyan (24-0).

Next for him is his first pay-per-view appearance, as he will face Andrey Tsurkan in a 10-round junior middleweight bout on Top Rank's June 27 card in Atlantic City. Martirosyan-Tsurkan is part of the undercard for the main event, which pits WBO junior featherweight champion Juan Manuel Lopez against Oliver Lontchi.

"It's going to be tough, but it's as tough as I want to make it," Martirosyan said of his next bout. "I have things to work on.

Fight over in one round
Boxing: Vanes Martirosyan wins by TKO at 2:00 mark of first round to stay undefeated.
GLENDALE — When Vanes “Nightmare” Martirosyan’s scheduled opponent, Juan Astorga, pulled out of Saturday night’s 10-round clash just days before the bout, the Glendale super welterweight prospect didn’t bat an eye.

Instead, he simply battered Astorga’s short-notice replacement, Harrison Cuello, for all of 2:13 of the first round before winning via technical knockout at Buffalo Bill’s Resort and Casino in Primm, Nev. to improve his perfect record to 24-0 with his 15th knock- out.

The Lonely Crusade of Glen Johnson
Jr. middleweight Vanes Martirosyan was on the non-televised portion of the show and he halted the overmatched Harrison Cuello in one.

Martirosyan didn't have much resistance, but you could see that he's making a concerted effort to keep his feet planted and to fight in the pocket. Throughout much of his professional career, he's been like that young, jittery quarterback who instead of stepping up in the face of pressure, takes off from the pass pocket and starts scrambling around. I think he has a real opportunity to look good against Andrey Tsurkan on June 27th in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Martirosyan ready to move on
“Freddie knows my style from when I was there before and he’s adding to it,” said Martirosyan (23-0, 14 knockouts), who went 17-0 with 11 KOs in his first stint under the tutelage of Roach, which ended in Dec. 2007. “[There’s] a few things that I’ve changed. Freddie’s trying to get me to get on my toes again, work my jab and move around a little bit — don’t just stand there and be a target for my opponent.”

Martirosyan’s return to the Wild Card Boxing Club in late February coincided with the training camp for Roach’s most high-profile client, Manny Pacquiao, in preparation for his May 2 fight against Ricky Hatton.

Vanes: "Roach is Teaching Me To Be Like Pacquiao"
USA Olympian Vanes Martirosyan, reunited with chief trainer Freddie Roach, says he's throwing "every punch faster and with a lot more force."

"Freddie and Michael Moorer have spent a lot of time with me at the Wild Card Gym," said Martirosyan. "I feel strong and confident. I'm going to throw a lot of punches and with a lot of power. Freddie is teaching me to be more explosive, like Manny Pacquiao."

Martirosyan, 23-0, of Glendale, Ca. will take on super welterweight Harrison Cuello, 16-9-2, of New York on Top Rank's fight card on Saturday, May 16, at the Star of the Desert Arena in Primm, Nevada.

As an amateur Martirosyan had wins over Andre Berto, Timothy Bradley and Shawn Estrada. "I got my nickname 'Nightmare' during the Western Trials when I began beating all of the ranked fighters," said Vanes.

Vanes was born in Abozyan, Armenia. His father was an amateur boxer. The family moved to Glendale, Ca. when Vanes was four years old.

"Dad said I had a lot of energy, always running around the house," said Vanes. "I began boxing at the age of seven."
