2004 Olympian and #12 ranked IBF junior middleweight contender Vanes “The Destroyer” Martirosyan moved one step closer to his hopes of winning a world title with a six round pummeling of hardcore veteran Andrey Tsurkan.
Martirosyan set the terms of the fight early as he kept the advancing Tsurkan on the outside with constant pinpoint left jabs.
Tsurkan continued to plod forward though, taking several combinations, mixed in with uppercuts during rounds two and three.
With his face severely reddened and puffed out from the various shots, Tsurkan finally got Vanes to trade in round four. Vanes though was just too quick and after the wild exchange, he stepped back and continued his mastery of getting in and out of punching rage with heavy shots behind the constant jabs.
Late in the round, Vanes wobbled the Russian with over hand right. Tsurkan however had the heart of a warrior and continued to press forward, desperately trying to turn the tide as Martirosyan rained down various combinations.
A huge welt had formed under the eye of Tsurkan by round five from the constant attack that he no answer for.
By round six the straight rights from the Martirosyan opened a cut over the right eye of Tsurkan. The game and bleeding Tsurkan continued to press forward with hopes of landing that one big shot that would never come.
As Tsurkan returned to the corner in round six, he looked battered and beaten. With little argument from the corner of Tsurkan, the referee stopped the contest at the advice of the ringside physician.
Vanes Martirosyan averaged 46 jabs thrown per round, landing over 89 jabs in the fight. He was also extremely accurate with his power punches, landing 46% of his power shots (78 of 171) compared to just 31 of 83 landed by Tsurkan.
Martirosyan kept his record perfect at 25-0 with 16 knockouts while Tsurkan drops to 26-5 with 17 knockouts.---Kurt Wolfheimer |

There were no knockdowns in the fight, although Martirosyan had him badly hurt in the fourth, and progressively grew more vicious in his attack in the subsequent rounds. Swelling around Tsurkan’s left eye is ultimately what led to the stoppage, although the insane amount of punishment he absorbed was every bit as qualifying.
There have been rumblings of 2009 becoming his breakout year, and the Glendale (CA)-based junior middleweight is well on his way. The win was already the third of the year for the 23-year old, with a possible Boxing After Dark showcase on tape later this year or in early 2010. |

Martirosyan, Roach re-unite!

After a one-year stay in Houston, Texas, Vanes “The Nightmare” Martirosyan (23-0, 14 KOs) has made his return back home to Glendale, CA. Vanes is excited to re-unite with his former trainer Freddie Roach, and ready to start training again at The WildCard Boxing Club in Hollywood, CA. “It saddens me to leave Ronnie Shields and Houston after a very productive one year run, but my team and I made a tough decision and believe this change will be best for my career at this time” said Martirosyan.
“I cannot thank Ronnie, Brian Caldwell, and Creed Fountain and the rest of the guys at Savannah Gym enough for the many hours they put in with me and for all that I learned during my time there. I would also like to take time to thank Dr. Albrik Nazarian for being a great friend and mentor during my stay in Houston. I do look forward to a fresh start here with Freddie Roach - who I began my pro career with, and can’t wait to get in the gym. This is a very big year for me and I’m now more than ever determined to take it to that next level and make some noise at 154.” (Continued) |

Martirosyan dominates Tsurkan
June 28, 2009
GLENDALE — Vanes “Nightmare” Martirosyan’s opponent in the 25th fight of his professional career Saturday night was advertised as a hard-headed scrapper who could take a beating but keep on coming.
Andrey Tsurkan delivered as promised, but all the Ukrainian veteran got for his perseverance was six rounds of punishment and a badly swollen left eye that prompted a stoppage of the fight prior to the start of the seventh round.
Martirosyan, who resides in Glendale and trains at Freddie Roach’s Wild Card gym in North Hollywood, was forced to labor for six rounds to finish off Saturday’s light middleweight bout, scheduled for 10 rounds, at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J.

Another Fight...
June 28, 2009
... undefeated junior middleweight Vanes Martirosyan (25-0, 16KO) cruised in what was supposed to be the biggest test of his career. The brash 2004 US Olympian hit Andrey Tsurkan (26-5, 17KO) with every punch in the book before the fight was stopped after six violently one-sided rounds.
If Tsurkan for whatever reason decides to continue with his career, he should strongly consider dumping his manager and his promoter (Star Boxing). This was the second straight fight in which his handlers willingly pimped him out, having endured a massive beating at the hands of Alfredo Angulo eight months ago.

411's Ringside Report
June 28, 2009

In the first bout of the televised portion of the card, hot prospect Vanes Martirosyan earned easily the best win of his career in a six round dusting of the very tough and respected Andrey Tsurkan. From the onset of Round 1, it was clear Vanes would be too much for Andrey who came forward but was met by a number of crisp 1 - 2 combo's that were often followed by a sloppy uppercut that could be a problem against a more skilled opponent. Vanes was able to open a cut over Tsurkan with a strong right that swelled throughout the fight forcing the stoppage in the sixth round.

In addition to handing Medina his first loss, Martirosyan has also established something of a yardstick for comparison against John Duddy foes. Before he knocked out Harrison Cuello in one last month, Martirosyan beat Billly Lyell two months before Lyell put the first ‘W’ on the popular Irishman’s record, and last November he had a KO1 of Charlie Howe, who had extended Duddy the distance five months earlier.

Martirosyan ready to move on
“Freddie knows my style from when I was there before and he’s adding to it,” said Martirosyan (23-0, 14 knockouts), who went 17-0 with 11 KOs in his first stint under the tutelage of Roach, which ended in Dec. 2007. “[There’s] a few things that I’ve changed.
